Frequently Asked Questions

We try to anticipate questions you might have about our programs and provide the answers here.  If you need additional information send email to us under the "Contact Us" tab listed in this website.

What Should Learn to Skate Skaters Wear?

It is recommended that skaters wear comfortable layers that allow for movement with long sleeves and pants, gloves or mittens.  Helmets, such as a bike helmet or HECC helmet, are encouraged.

Do skaters need to have their own skates for Learn to Skate?

It is recommended that skaters own their own skates.  However, rental skates are available starting at a child size 10 and there are no rental fees for skaters enrolled in the learn to skate class.  Rental skates are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Please note that double-bladed skates are not allowed.  Hockey skates are allowed, but may be more challenging to a beginning skater.

Are skating aids, like chairs or crates, used in learn to skate classes?

It is our experience that most skaters are able to stand up or skate without the use of skating aids.  Additionally, skating aids can be dangerous or cause injury.  Therefore, we do not normally use skating aids in our programs.

Can parents go on the ice with their children during class?

For safety reasons, parents are not allowed on the ice during classes.  Although it may be tempting to want to help your child, for safety reasons, please do not step onto the ice wearing shoes at any time.  Our staff is experienced and will be available to assist your child.  It is our experience that most young children do better when their parents are not visible during class.  Please use the bleachers or lobby, rather than the hockey boxes for viewing the class.

Are makeup classes allowed?

Makeup classes are generally not allowed.

How quickly can I expect my skater to advance?

Progress is unique for each participant and is dependent on many factors.  Each class level is designed to teach a specific set of skills that will be built upon in subequent levels.  It is important that each skater acquire the skill set to the accepted standard before advancing to the next level to ensure success.  Instructors will evaluate skaters during the classes and make the necessary recommendations.

Anything else I should know?

Please sign up for your Learn to Skate classes in advance.   Online registration is encouraged at www.fmcicesports.com.  Please keep in mind that, while walkons are accepted, coaches might not be adequately prepared to handle a large number of walkons, resulting in larger than anticipated class size.

Also, please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to the start of class time to allow plenty of time to get skates on and find your class.
